How it works
Comparison mode accepts one source, shows it untouched, then waits for Compare formats before creating three real encoded outputs: JPEG, WebP and AVIF. Their dimensions remain aligned, while default qualities are respectively 82, 80 and 55. Selecting a card puts that exact Blob into the before-and-after viewer.
The purpose is evidence, not a universal winner. File size, fine texture, transparency support, decode compatibility and encode time all matter differently for a photograph, screenshot or illustration.
Formats and settings
- JPEG is the broad compatibility reference and flattens transparency onto white after confirmation.
- WebP balances current browser support with efficient photo and alpha encoding.
- AVIF often targets a lower byte size but can encode more slowly; inspect edges and gradients on your own source.
A concrete example
A transparent product cutout might show a small AVIF, a quick WebP and a larger JPEG with a white background. A textured photograph may rank differently. The interface reports bytes and time without claiming that the smallest file is automatically best.
Know before you start
- The three quality scales are codec-specific and not directly equivalent.
- A browser preview cannot predict every downstream editor or social network re-encode.
- Comparison outputs are indicative derivatives, not archival masters.

Frequently asked questions
Which format is best?
There is no single best format. Choose from the real image based on size, visible quality, alpha, compatibility and workflow.
Why is AVIF quality 55 lower than JPEG 82?
Quality numbers belong to different encoders and cannot be compared as percentages of the same scale.
What happens to transparency in JPEG?
JPEG has no alpha. The comparison version uses a visible white flattening choice and labels the warning.
