How it works
The web preset creates WebP at quality 80 and limits the long edge to 1920 pixels without enlarging smaller sources. Encoding runs after orientation and resize, then the result is checked and offered with a predictable web filename.
This produces a useful publishing derivative, not a full responsive image pipeline. You can repeat the resize with distinct widths when your site needs several srcset candidates.

- The 1920-pixel ceiling suits many content columns and high-density screens.
- Keep PNG for sharp graphics when the WebP comparison shows no useful saving.
A concrete example
A 5000×3333 hero photo can become a 1920×1280 WebP. For a responsive site, create additional 1280- and 768-pixel versions deliberately, then let the site choose among them rather than serving the largest file everywhere.

Should every website image be 1920 pixels?
No. Match each asset to its rendered slot and provide smaller responsive variants where useful.
What about AVIF?
AVIF can be smaller but encodes more slowly and has different compatibility tradeoffs. Use the comparison route for your actual image.
