How it works
Target size performs a bounded local search for the best tested encoding under the requested byte limit. Its draft contains a byte target, a strategy and one explicit dimension-reduction permission—never a manual quality slider.
The Worker reports whether the target was reached, how many bounded attempts were used and the real output dimensions.
Formats and settings
- Enter the target in KB or MB within the documented 10 KB to 20 MB bounds.
- Quality first, Balanced and Size first use distinct bounded quality ranges.
- Dimensions can shrink only when the dedicated permission remains enabled.
A concrete example
A 4 MB photo can target 500 KB with the balanced strategy. If quality changes are insufficient, dimension reduction occurs only when you allowed it.
Know before you start
- A target is not a promise of an exact byte count.
- An unrealistic target is reported rather than hidden.
- PNG input uses an alpha-capable WebP search because PNG has no lossy quality scale.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no quality slider?
The bounded search owns quality so a stale manual value cannot interfere with the target.
Can dimensions change?
Only when the visible dimension-reduction permission is enabled.
Is the target exact?
No. Sparkpond Image Tools returns the best safe tested candidate and reports whether it reached the limit.
