How it works

This route accepts a static PNG and locks the output to WebP. The PNG decoder expands the image to pixels in the local Worker, including its alpha channel, then the WebP encoder creates a new 8-bit result. Re-encoding also drops PNG text chunks and other user metadata.

The output signature, MIME type and dimensions are checked before the download button appears. Transparency stays available in WebP; nothing is flattened onto a background.

Formats and settings

  • The targeted default is WebP quality 82 for a balanced visual result.
  • Dimensions stay unchanged unless you enable resizing.
  • Choose a lower quality for photographs or a higher value for UI captures with fine edges.

A concrete example

A 2400×1600 transparent product cutout can become a WebP with identical dimensions and alpha. A photographic PNG often shrinks substantially; a flat-color interface capture may need a higher quality or may be better left as PNG.

Know before you start

  • Animated PNG is not accepted.
  • WebP is widely supported in modern browsers, but a legacy publishing workflow may still require PNG.
  • Lossy WebP is not byte-for-byte lossless even when the preview looks unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Will the transparent background survive?

Yes. WebP supports alpha and this route does not flatten transparent pixels.

Is WebP always smaller than PNG?

No. It is often smaller for photographic content, while tiny or palette-like graphics can already be efficient as PNG.

Does conversion remove metadata?

Yes. The controlled pixel re-encode does not copy user text, EXIF or location blocks into the output.
